A Lesson Before Dying Journals
Benefits, Ernest. A Lesson Prior to Dying. Nyc. Vintage Contemporaries, 1993. Government:
" Twelve light men declare a dark man must die, and another white man units the time and period without consulting one black person. Proper rights? ” (Gains 157).
Gains displays the reader how corrupt the justice system is in this quote. Gains character, Grant, basically happy about how precisely the system works. He tells the reader just how white males do anything in the govt, they make in the jury and possess a say but not an individual colored man has a say in the government or the destiny of an additional colored guy. Gains stresses the point from the corrupt authorities due to racial inequalities.
" A statue of a Confederate gift stood for the right from the walk that led up to the courthouse door. Above the brain of the sculpture, national, express, and confederate flags flew on long metal poles” (Gains 69).
Gains depict the tainted government simply by showing the courthouse. Browsing front is a statue of the Confederate enthusiast. The courthouse is supposed to be considered a place of equality but it reveals the southern region still approves of slaves and segregation. It frustrates the colored community to learn they are reduced by their color. The courthouse is an example of the splitting up of the govt. " вЂGentlemen of the court, be merciful. For God's sake, always be merciful. He is innocent of charges brought against him'” (Gains 8). Gains shows how the govt and proper rights system is damaged when an harmless man is sentenced to death for no reason. Jefferson hardly ever killed any individual but was wiped out by cruel words, embarrassment, and misjudgment. But the fact is though he did not have a specific thing to do with this a white man was killed and so they must end a dark man's existence. Gains aggravation becomes evident through Give when he clarifies how it's an all white colored jury and a white colored judge and a white man whom sets the date, and never a single coloured person is involved every time a black man is being found guilty.
" вЂWhy that date? '... вЂEaster' this individual said [... ] вЂFriday, April 8th, between noon and 3... '” (Gains 156). Benefits makes a relation to Jefferson's delivery date and Jesus's. They plan this after Easter because the people today belonging to the church could easily get upset with them if they have that during Easter. They symbolize each other mainly because when Christ died not merely at the same time, but as an faithful man. Jefferson is a great innocent person that is wiped out by misjudgment just like Jesus. " вЂAnd what do you suggest, Rev. Ambrose? ' I asked. вЂGod, '... вЂHe needs The almighty in that cell, not that sin package. ' вЂWhat sin box? ' My spouse and i said. вЂWhat do you call that kind of music he listen to? '” (Gains 181). Reverend Ambrose and Give disagree the entire book about religious concerns and when Offer gives Jefferson the radio the Rev. does not agree and argues with Grant about this. The Rev. calls it a " sin box” because everyone listened to gospel till the radio came about and now they will listen to a wider variety than just gospel. Jefferson listens to a wide variety of music and it angers the Rev. because he thinks Jefferson requires God above all else but Jefferson has no interest just like a developing number of people on this time. " No matter how educated a guy was (he meant me personally, though he didn't call up my name), he, too, was locked in the frosty, dark cell of ignorance if he did not know God inside the pardon of his sins... My cousin said вЂAmen' louder than anyone, and she was looking directly at me” (Gains 146). Gains elaborates on the fact that not everyone stocks and shares the same hope or perspective on religion. Rev. doesn't like it that Grant won't believe in Our god anymore. He calls him out on everything the time great aunt does the same. Profits shows just how everyone won't share the same faith. Economics:
