The majority of pupils will be able to explain how come drugs should be tested ahead of they can be prescribed. Describe the uses and problems associated with thalidomide. Several pupils will be able to explain how the drug screening procedure for thalidomide was improper and illustrate the main steps in testing a new drug. Clarify the terms placebo and double-blind trial. Ideas: Testing of new prescription drugs and clinical trials. Thalidomide. Misguided beliefs: | Scientists are constantly developing new drugs. The moment new medical drugs are devised, they must be widely tested and trialled before being used. Drugs are tested in a number of stages to determine if they are effective and safe. New prescription drugs are thoroughly tested pertaining to toxicity, efficacy and medication dosage: � in the laboratory, using cells, cells and live animals� in clinical trials including healthy volunteers and individuals. Very low doasage amounts of the medication are given in the beginning of the medical trial. In case the drug is found to be safe, further clinical trials are carried out to find the optimum dosage for the drug. In a few double window blind trials, a lot of patients are given a placebo, which would not contain the drug. Neither the doctors neither the patients know who has received a placebo and who has received the drug until the trial is finish. Thalidomide is known as a drug that was developed as being a sleeping supplement. It was also available to be effective in relieving morning sickness in pregnant women. Thalidomide had not been examined for use in expecting mothers. Unfortunately, many babies born to moms who took the medication were born with extreme limb malocclusions.
